âAs a physician, it is truly an honor to be entrusted by patients with something very important â Their physicality.â
Dr. Higgs attended Columbia University in New York City, New York, where he completed medical school, a general surgery internship and his residency in orthopedic surgery. After finishing extensive medical training, he served as a physician with the United States Army Medical Corps. This took him to South Korea, where he attended to U.S. troops as an orthopedic physician; Germany, where he was named Assistant Chief of Orthopedic Surgery at the U.S. Army Hospital in Heidelberg; and Hungary, where he served as Chief of Orthopedic Surgery at a combat support hospital during the Bosnian war.
âI began my higher education with a focus on engineering, but ultimately decided that it wasnât the right career path for me. While in college, I also played football but suffered a serious ankle injury that required extensive surgery. I was so impressed with my surgeon and his compassion in treating my injury that I felt compelled to explore a career in healthcare, particularly orthopedic surgery. After completing my medical training, including schooling, internships and residency, I served as a physician with the United States Army Medical Corps. While my career thus far has taken me places far and wide â including South Korea, Germany, Boston, Hungary and New York City â my goal to provide personalized, empathetic patient care remains unchanged.â
After completing a fellowship in orthopedic sports medicine/shoulder surgery at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts, Dr. Higgs opted to further explore his passion for sports medicine. His experience includes serving as the Assistant Team Physician for the New England Patriots, the Boston Bruins and several of Harvard Universityâs athletic teams. Most recently, he was the Washington Redskinsâ training camp team physician. Through his many accomplishments and armed with incredibly diverse medical experience, Dr. Higgs is committed to serving his patients with the most innovative techniques and the highest standards of care.
